Collected Poems of Edgar Allan Poe
I have been a big fan of Edgar Allan Poe ever since i was introduced to "The Tell-Tale Heart" in eight grade i believe. After being assigned other readings such as "The Cask of Amontillado" i actually began to enjoy reading. The Collected Poems of Edgar Allen Poe is actually the first book i have ever bought on my own, which i bought yesterday. I just really enjoy the power and passion that Poe puts into his writing. I prefer to read his poetry for the most part because in alot of cases one poem can make clear a message that would usually take a story. I also enjoy the poetic language more than narrative language because its more fun to read and its song-like. Alot of poems can be really fun to read if you just find the right pace/melody to read it at. Of course not all poetry is supposed to rhyme, but even when it doesn't, there are appropriate pauses that, if found, make it more enjoyable to read. The Raven, one of Poe's most famous poems is a good example of this. If you read it closely and follow the rhyme, you can almost snap your fingers and dance to it. Annabel Lee is another perfect example. I enjoy Poe's writing also because he is brilliant with word usage and his descriptiveness. So much of Poe's writing is though of as scary, but beneath the "scary" element, there is nothing but genious.

I suggest you read about the author. He lead a very interesting life. He was a very revolutionary for his time. I also enjoy his works tremendously.
ReplyDeleteYes, EAP has certainly earned his place of distinction in American culture, hasn't he? When I first start to read Poe, I'm a little thrown off by his amazing vocabulary. It just takes a few minutes, and I'm drawn into his stories. Because his language (syntax) is so mesmerizing, his stories are fun to read aloud.
ReplyDeletetotally agree. great campfire stuff. he's got that bittersweet quality to his pieces that really makes you think.
ReplyDeleteI think "The Tell-Tale Heart" was the first Edgar Allan Poe story that I read too. It also made me want to read more of his stories. I liked "The Raven" too. Have you read "The Black Cat?" I thought it was good.
